Threaded tip eyes

On The top of my specialist rod the tip eye is threaded, would I be correct in thinking this is for a swing tip. If so how are they rated and does anyone use them if so where and for what?

It's also for a quiver tip,gives you some flexability.I've got swingtips in my box but haven't used them since the quiver came on the scene.From memory I only used them on stillwater and they are as good as any bobbing type indicator like the quiver they are weight graded.

I believe swingtips were originally devised for use on running water. The principle being that there should be a precise balance between the pull from the flow and the weight on the swingtip, any change, i.e. a pull forward or a drop back being a bite indication. I have also used springtips in the past, usually when conditions were windy, but would nowadays prefer to use a side indicator.

spring tips are rubbish tangles and can't cast cause the tip is bend rightround

i agree with nicky the threaded tip ring was common years ago the bad thing
is the swingtip or quivertip never seem to line up with the rod rings so the swingtip is always a bit loose
thus causing more tangles .

Yep! Maybe a good idea but not very practical. Just before you throw out all your old swingtips, keep the threaded metal portion and attach a betalite to it for night fishing.

yeah i think wen you cast with it you might have to cast the rod sidewards

Cheers all, The reason I wasn't sure is the rod has a quiver section with push in tips as well and the swingtip was the only thing I could think of for screwing into the end, but I've never used one . ;-}~

Don't throw your swingtips away, I know that their use is limited and you may never use one but, I won a match this summer when I drew a very tight swim that was too tight for a quivertip and I had to point the rod directly at the feeder (Staight out), the bites were extremely sensitive but I creamed the opposition because I got good takes on the swingtip when others struggled to see bites on other methods. I may not need to use one for another ten years but in the right place at the right time they can be excellent.

A side indicator or butt indicator would serve the same purpose as above and has the advantage that a change can be made without breaking down. I have more than once switched to a side indicator on a float rod when conditions changed.

Keith, Do you mean the side indicator that is fixed at the butt end of the rod? If so then isn't it a quiver (or swingtip) type indicator but fixed at the butt end of the rod?. although these are excellent indicators in 90% of situations I prefer a swingtip which is more sensitive because the line does'nt have to slide through all of the the rod rings before the bite is registered at the butt end of the rod, in most situations this friction is not enough to matter but sometimes it does make a difference and when you are fishing a match you can't afford to go for second best.
When using the swingtip you can set it so that the tip is just touching the surface and if you use the right size swingtip then you see the bite well before any resistance is felt by the fish. :eek:}

I meant either a Polaris sidewinder or the Middy type which clips on with a terry clip near the butt. I would agree that a swingtip is more sensitive when correctly set and the conditions are not too windy. A side indicator works well in rough conditions with the rod straight out and the rod tip below the surface. The line passes through one eye and because the line forms a vee the movement of the tip is twice that of a quivertip. The butt indicator has a vee line rest which means the line can be lifted off for total freedom when casting. As the rod is pointing straight friction against rings is reduced.

Keith (Manger),
The line only goes through 3 or 4 eyes when using the Polaris as the indicator is positioned on the top section of the rod so the friction would be less than the Middy version butt indicator as the line is pulled through all the eyes before it reaches the indicator.
