I know all the above have there pros and cons so just thought id ask what all of you think? going on the mighty trent tomorrow after barbel or whatever happens to swim past my baitand take a liking to it, and ive just got thinking about hooklength materials, the old match angler in me cant help using mono when fishing baits such as maggott and caster but when it comes to pelletts, meat and bolies im sort of scratching my head as which of the above to use {wishes it was still the 80's when ya just had bayer for stick float and maxima for owt else} thanks chaps

I don't think you need to make the choice,if your happy with mono, carry on.
Or,try the others out, and see if it makes any difference, to YOU.

I'm going on the Trent tomorrow, shame I won't recognise you, if I bump into you, on the bank!!!

All depends where on the trent your headed fred my guess reading what all you chaps are writing about is the tidal, not quite ventured that far these past few years, think i need to get my passport stamped to go that far.

Its not just baits you need to consider. What about the river bed and general conditions etc??

For example I like to use fluro in very clear water.....

I did not get a bite from low, clear Severn yesterday. Would changing to f/carbon hooklength have helped. I normally use 10lb Pro Gold. Have used Drennan Fly f/carbon 10lb but lost too many barbel from snaggy swims on Dane. I have got 15lb Fulling Mill and 8lb Drennan. Any other ones I could use...???

Hi Robert

It may not be your hook length so try these before playing around too much:

Keep the rod tip very low so your main line is as close to the bottom as possible.

If you're using a hair rig check that your hook isn't glinting in the sunlight. I've not found an effective way of dulling down my hooks, but I've switched to the Drennan Super Specialist Barbel hooks which have a PTFE coating.

If you do switch to fluorocarbon you've got to take great care with your knots. Most manufacturers recommend the Palomar knot. I've used Fulling Mill fluorocarbon for trout fishing and its been reliable. I'm currently looking at Airflo G4. Its worked fine when tenching, but I've not yet used it for Barbel.

My decision re braid v mono would be the environment I'm fishing in. I would be happy to use braid where there are no rocks, ledges or gullies. My choice would also be for its strength to diameter ratio, in general you can probably get away with a third to half the lead when fishing with braid. However, on the Ribble it's not unusual to have the river bed littered with rocks the size of bead badgers "Jim Hinchley's description of the river bed after a diving session". The big barbell make full use of these dead badgers and braid snaps like cotton when run across them.

When the river is clear i use.

Korda IQ.exrta soft intelligent hook link.

This is fluorocarbon simply the best i have used...

I also use braid when the river has colour.

And snake-skin if i am fishing snags,it gives a little protection from sharp rocks, logs and many other unknown objects.

I always leave the plastic coating intact for protection...

A 'dead badger' is Jim Hinchley's graphic description of a large rock on the bottom of the Ribble Andy!
