How much is a pole really worth?

Ron Clays' thread about margin poles and the use of poles to tackle really big fish got me thinking. If a strong 7 or 8 metre pole for margin fishing can retail for less than ?80 how come a reasonable 12.5m pole costs ?300 plus? Take away the slick marketing, endorsements and design fees to famous name match anglers, exactly how much does the carbon manderal cost and what makes the difference (weight and stiffness apart) between a ?600 pole and that costing ?2000 plus? Are we being ripped off by the manufacturers or getting value for money? How come spares always cost a fortune in relation to the orginal selling price of the pole. Anyone know what the manufacturers mark up(never mind the retailers)on a pole might be?
