Been using Korda Wide Gapes and Wide Gape X's (in snaggy swims) for about 4 years. No problems until recently when I've had two fail. Put the first one down to bad luck and one in a million. After all have caught nearly 200 carp in that time with no problem. I don't change hooks after every fish but I do after each day's fishing.

However when the second one went ( both snapped at the barb cut ) I wondered. Has anybody else had this problem?

I like the wire weight and shape of the hook, turns without causing mouth damage. I used to use Nash pattern 1's until they were discontinued. By the way for most of my Carp Fishing I use size 8, suits my boilie size (was a size 7 with the Nash hooks), through action (parabolic curve) rods (12' Harrison Ballista Slims 2.75lb) and 12 lb main line.

I need to change hooks, confidence has gone, any suggestions?

Stu (fortunately neither carp was massive but who knows what's next?)

I've been using Nash Fangs for all my carping and barbelling for the last few years. I've never had one open out or break on me yet.

Thanks Guys,

I'll look into these and see if there is a pattern that fits. It's funny but once you start thinking that a hook might go, you get paranoid about it. Probably unfair on Korda but I've got to change.

Bought some Fang uni's, seem to be the desired shape, little heavier in the wire than the Korda's I think. Am still looking into the Owners, I like to see things before I buy them.

Have tied a few rigs, will give them a go.

If I wanted a very strong hook, I would use Drennan Continental Boilie Hooks.

You won't straighten these out.

For Barbel, Drennan Super Specialist Barbel Hooks.

I don't work for, neither am I sponsored by Drennan by the way.

Owner hooks are easily obtainable all over South Africa by the way. Owners are SAs number 1 carp hook.

I've had a few wide gapes snap but it was years ago when they where first released, it was always on the bend. Most likely a dodgy batch, send the hooks to korda and ask for a refund.

I've used the Drennan conti's and there a good hook.

Thanks for the advice guys, it's genuinely appreciated. I'm experimenting with different hooks and will have a look at all of these.

The new Drennan specialist hooks look good - I've bought a few packs to try. shame Partridge don't do a full range of coarse fishing patterns - they used to do a curved type hook thta was very good for ledgering cheese psate for Chub.
