Using Lamprey as main bait - attempt to get zeds (and pike) - any advice on size of bait? My only zander was caught on db Lamprey - probably 5" long section - have just bought some frozen lamprey and will need to cut down and re package. I assume a larger bait will attract a larger fish - but dont mind catching smaller zander and dont want to alienate them.

Hi Richard,

I find bleak or roach best deads for Z's but have also caught on lamprey sections.

I'd suggest 4-6" for zander on size 10-6 snaps or singles is about right. If you are using snaps make sure that the spacing between hooks is appropriate to the small size of the bait.

Don't neglect the wobbling potential of lamprey tails...they are top predator attractors.

I'm not sure its advisable to fish deads in this current heatwave but if you do use braided mainline and very very sensitive bite indication.

Hope that helps :)
