Gary, an excellent article and well timed. Being an inexperienced 'Piker'
I found this article easy to understand and very informative. Can not wait for the next installment.

Yep, excellent Gary, that should be of great help to site users.....i use exactly the same method as Stu Johnson will verify!!...i know some experienced pikers hold their pike up off the ground and unhook them that way but too be honest i only see possible mishaps for both the pike and the angler in that method.
Stu.....you got the bug after your new PB today!!.....say thank you to Barney!

No problem Stu, well done and I'm glad you liked the article as well.

Paul - joking aside, you do see a lot of experienced pikers take huge risks with their quarry when unhooking and returning pike, dont you think ?

Better safe than sorry I say.....

Agree 100%! infact i'll go as far as to say to some of them it's a "look at me macho thing"........on a mat between the knees and lift the lower jaw!

Small pike are much harder to unhooked than a big one which are usually very easy to unhooked. Because they are small, some fisherman don't give them the same care and respect the bigger fish get. Don't forget with care small pike will become bigger pike

I found your article great to read and in depth enough for someone who is still hesitating about going for that first pike. Unfortunately i do think that when you start asking amateur pikers to play around with their life and death mechanism I think that we need more than two photos to get it right.
Every September I say yes this will be it - but ignorance is definitely not bliss. More info please -

Adrian, there's a lot of good advice out there these days.

The PAC do a book Piking Beyond 2000, which costs around six quid and has a lot of advice on rigs, unhooking etc.

There's also advice on the PAC site www.pacgb.co.uk

Whereabouts are you - we might have someone nearby who could take you out a couple of times and show you how to unhook them etc.

Gary,
Great stuff mate, i totally agree that pike should be treated with respect, big pike are easy its the little ones that have the devil in their eyes, 2 trips to the hospital to extract hooks in 6 months .unhooking jack pike in the water after catching them trolling, up in the air they go and u guessed it flying treble in the thumb the first time and the finger the second.I have learnt my lesson all small fish cime into the boat to be unhooked..5 injections in the thumb to get it out sore.

I'm probably being exceedingly dense (as usual) but where is this article?

bad un's in the plural.....

the forum ignores multiple spaces, you'll have to format in HTML for a para indent.

(apologies for poor punctuation etc tonight, I'm holding down the dog with one hand as he's shit scared of fireworks and they're bloody exploding everywhere)
