Wanting to have ago at river fishing at the moment all I do is lake fishing with 10 foot rod and a 7wt line.

I?m wondering what size rod would suit most rivers (if there is such a rod).

Also what kind of line weight,
I was thinking of a 7ft 6? or 8ft rod with a 4 or 5 line wt.

Will be fishing the Wye, Usk and possible the teifi.

Not sure really what would be best any suggestions grateful.

Lee I think you are spot on with the line weight. 4 or 5, take your pick.

You're fishing fairly big rivers though, I don't think you will gain anything by going for such a short rod. A longer rod will be an advantage for short line nymphing.

Personally I would go for 9 foot 5 weight.

I've got a Greyflex 8'6" #4/5 2 piece rod for sale if you're interested.

Email me if you are.

Lee,

I'm with Ric.
A 9' #5 is the best all round tool. If the wind is fierce or if you are struggling to cast weighted nymphs with the #5 line, don't be afraid to use a #6 on the same rod. I regularly do this if I know I'll mainly be fishing a short line.
This is not to say it is only a short line tactic. I can cast a #6 just as far as a #5 on my #5 rod.

I fish the Wharfe which is a medium size river, probably smaller than the Wye.

I started off fly fishing many years ago with a 9ft AFTM 6/7 rod and a size 7 line. I've gradually reduced the weight of the rod and line, so that I now use
a 9ft AFTM 5/6 fly rod and a size 5 double taper floating line.

My current rod is a Grey's and it cost about ?80. If you break a section (I did this spring !) send the broken section back to Grey's and a ?20 cheque and they'll supply a new section. I use a basic Hardy fly line costing just under ?30.

If you have a lower budget, look at Shakespeare's Royalty range costing about ?30.
