Stevie,it would all depend on the test curve and action of your rods.
Twenty years ago most anglers used quiver tip rods, then stepped up to avon type rods, then to the specialist rods of 1.75 - 2 lb T/C.
Nowadays it`s not unusual to see Barbel anglers with Carp rods and baitrunner reels.
Whether this type of tackle is needed or not is open for debate but you certainly wouldn`t be the only angler using Carp rods.
There`s alot of better and more qualified anglers on this forum than me and i`m sure some of them will give you some good advice.

Stevie i reckon you'll be fine with a carp rod. When i was on the Thames my dad used a 2.5lb carp rod and it still went right round. Its probably a bit heavy but will make to till he gets a new rod.

Mr Crabtree used to catch Barbel on a garden cane, bent nail and a piece of old washing line, anglers today are just a bunch of Shimano stroking tackle-tarts,
I mean ,look at Christians fish, he caught that using one of his mums old stockings and an old coke bottle !!

normal bobbin and bait runners would be ideal. Or else touch ledgering. Just watch out for the barbel police though!!

Carp rods tend to be less forgiving than barbel/specimen rods, in other words they are more rigid. It won't stop you catching barbel but there is a greater risk of hook pulls using a stiff carp rod.

Christian , I like you, you are living proof that man can live without a brain, I won't ask how old you are, as you couldn't possibly count that high, but just remember they do say 'Ignorance is Bliss' that must make you the happiest person I know,
By the way great photo, but I have been wondering, would you mind if I ask 'was anyone else hurt in the accident' ??

Christian your a nice lad, just what we call a bit 'Dim', and I sympathise, I really do, but thats what happens when your parents are siblings.
I mean we can see the 'wheel spinning', but the hamster is clearly Dead !!
I could send you a brain, but it would be terribly lonely, but nevermind just keep talking oneday you may say something intelligent !!

If your going to send me a brain please be kind enough to make sure its not yours, then i really would be 'Dim'.
To be honest it must be terrible to act like a 5 year old because you dont like perch. Didnt Mummy ever tell you, you cant always have your own way. But dont worry if you really need some help im sure the NHS can help you, on second thoughts you should probably go private.

Steve you can get a perfectly good barbel rod for around ?50. One of mine is a Shimano Hyperloop barbel power 1.75 tc and it's great piece of kit.
