Fishing Clothing to be exact.

I own a couple of fishing suits.

One is a Carp Outfit, well a Carp designed outfit, It came with Jacket, Bib n Brace, Fleece, Hat and Gloves. I have had the suit for about 4 years now and although it's a little dirty it's still in reasonably god nick and keeps my toasty and warm, it's water proof qualities aren't great but it will keep you reasonably dry for a while.

The second suit is one i got from Aldi about 6 years ago, it is a light weight breathable suit, Just a short wading style jacket and Bib n Brace. It's greta for them warmer months when there is still a bit of a shower or a downpour as this summer is beginning to look like. It's not as warm as the other suit but it's water proof qualitites are much much better.

Both suits are fine, however, neither would be very good for the Roving Angler as the first one would be to Warm and you'd end up sweating your Nads off. The 2nd suit although breathable it isn't the best and i to think you'd end up sweating to much in it.

So what clothing do you wear for your angling when you're roving around but still want protection from the differing elements that the great british weather can throw at you ?

P.S i'm not looking to purchase anything right now, i am just doing the research for future reference.

Depends how much you want to spend. Goretex, particularly if you want a bib and brace will cost you hundreds and your choice is halkon hunt and daiwa which is made by halkon hunt. A cheaper fix would be army surplus, particularly yank stuff (eBay ecwcs but make sure it isn't a non goretex copy) which is real goretex. Option b would be protak which isn't bad but not as good as goretex. They are struggling with production at the moment. Option c would be to look at workwear. Strauss direct and helly Hansen have some interesting options I'm keen on investigating and are cheaper than goretex but is likely to be better than anything tackle companies produce.

Option d,e, and f are things like paramo and event which birders like but really demands a second mortgage so I'm not going into it now but will do on request. Keela looks interesting too.

And by a decent soft-shell. They breath, wick moisture away and offer some degree of shower proofing. Wouldn't be without mine now. Oh and some will recommend sundridge. One of mine leaked and the other is so padded (great for winter can't knock it for that) that breathability is non existent.

Had sundridge suits in the past, great for warmth but not as waterproof as i would have liked as i prefer to fish without a Brolly.

Some things i really don't mind paying extra for so long as they are good quality and i get wear out of them. Are there Goretex suits designed just for Mobile Anglers ? I associate Halkon Hunt and Daiwa more as Match Fishing suits ...

I did think about outdoor clothing shops but i am looking at all options that are available.

If you are roving (and dont want a b n b) I'd look at army surplus, certainly if you are hacking through undergrowth. Cheaper to replace when you put a big hole in it. Very recently the company who uk stuff was putting their own new supply's stuff on ( Scottish firm can't remember the name ) but failing that strikeforce supplies have a good rep and good prices. That uk army stuff isn't blessed with pockets.

If you do want a b n b your stuck with daiwa or some day glow sailing stuff. There are bargains out there but generally it's arm and a leg time. If you aren't in a rush and want to look like tree cabelas in the states looks brill but you are taking a big gamble size wise. But quiet, durable camo goretex - sounds awesome !!!

Edit : if some of that doesn't make sense it's because I'm on my iPhone and it's filling in what it thinks I mean rather than what I mean.

For supply read surplus.

Tie - regimental. Outer Jacket - Barbour - what else old chap.

When I’m stalking a river I keep a low profile, wear a fake heron (as this must be the most efficient camouflage going as it’s evolved over millions of years) sweat like **** but as long as I catch........:wh

For wet days in the summer through autumn I bought the Dri-Fish 1000 bib and brace trousers and a ¾ length jacket. They are fully waterproof and yet allow you to 'breathe'

For later in the year I prefer to use several layers underneath an Orvis Jacket and Trouser set that again is totally waterproof. I use this set when fly fishing in the spring and summer as well.

I still have the Wychwood Winter kit as well for those truly frosty days and nights.

Thanks for the info so far everyone, certainly enough to mulch over for just now.

I'll take a look at the Army Surplus as well as the more expensive Goretex suits and weigh up my options. Orvis ..... i prefer Warburtons myself :D

I'll look up their website Peter and have a wee browse round.

If you want the best it has to be made of gore tex ripstop materials the best do tend to be aimed at the military market and are not cheap but they are the very best and will last ages. There are very specialist suppliers to the military personnel who provide better than the standard military issue, but the military issue is pretty good and far better than any of the fishing market suits.

I have Sundridge, Wychwood, and Diawa all good but not as good as military type clothing some of the American, German, Swedish and Norwegian waterproof tank suits even secondhand can be very impressive and a heck of a lot cheaper.

Steph mate, like water toad says, ex army is sound, used it all my angling life, At the mo I have British army Goretex 3/4 coat and trews, You can move around all day in them when its "chuckin it" down with rain you will not get wet. Rain over and you can pack it small in your ruckie. As one of the posters here says british army gear is a bit short of pockets but its no big drawback. Try Denbigh army surplus, under fifty quid will get you sorted, some even cheaper if you want to play the patient game. Another cracking bit of "roving kit" that I really have time for is a two peice suit that is "italian army issue"its camo and also ripstop, it packs away even smaller than the british gear and I often use it on the river while trotting and an umberella is not an option.
It isnt breathable tho but in truth it doesnt really matter for one day stints, sure there is a bit of moisture on my fleece at the end of a session but by that time i'm off home, I remember some years ago I was talking to a well known angler who poo poo' ed this bit of kit saying it was ****, since that time I have seen him in the angling mags showing off some fish or other(after me-lol) and on several occasions he was wearing the latest "must have" bit of clothing. So much for my bit of ****-- it still keeps me dry!!!

Bring back tweed :w

Hehehe...

Can you imagine the reaction if one Saturday morning a river/canal bank in a small town was suddenly full of anglers wearing tweeds and I assume plus fours all fishing.

What do you think people would do or say.

I can see it now The World Carp Championship.

The anglers come out of their Bivvys in the morning and loog across the lake towards the English team, and there they are.

All dressed in Army Surplus gear, ...................Tanks and All.

I wonder what the Germans would say...............:)

Indeed. Oddly I saw a tank filling up at my local petrol station. In an unrelated matter the rumoured tackle superstore in Sheffield is no longer rumoured. Bankside tackle and bait now have a superstore on Holbrook industrial estate.

for what it's worth, I use stuff from mountaineering shops-gore tex is really overkill for an activity like fishing-the rate of vapour transmission is way in excess of what you actually need so you're paying for a spec which you dont need and will not use. Pointless. However, waxed cotton is asking to sweat to death in your own moisture so the way forward is a breathable fabric (loads of competitors to goretex out there-event, triple point etc.) What I am also looking for is a close fitting set up which will still give good mobility-again, hill gear is way ahead of most, if not all dedicated fishing stuff I have seen. Cheaper, better design, appropriate materials. Bit of a no-brainer to my mind.
