Fishing rod prices

I thought this might be the case eventually. When the world wide tackle trade, aerospace, armaments and sports industries world wide puts its trust in just a few Far East manufacturers of carbon cloth, then something is sure to go feet up.

The problem is that a few plants in the world making the raw materials of carbon fibre cannot supply the demand. There are two answers to this, either the west must invest in certain technology which perhaps it does not have at present, and make the stuff, or we go back to glass and split cane!

I really should replace a few broken quiver tips that I have before next year. They are twenty quid a piece now.
If the prices double as predicted I could buy a new rod.

Maybe that is the way we are going, brake something , throw it away and buy a new one.
One thing for sure it will make us respect what we already have.

This could be the end of the road for the tackle tarts.

End of the road for us tackle tarts...never. My specialism is all the gear, no idea! Today I bought a new Fox Evolution compact carryall. I didnt really NEED it but it took my eye and seems much better than the cheapo bag I already have.
As for rod prices, its like petrol. Once people stop buying or being more picky, a price war starts amongst the shops and prices come down again. Heard it before I am afraid.

Can you imagine queues like they have in the X Factor qualifiers four times around the block outside Daves of Middlewich, all clutching ?300 to buy the very last carbon rods and poles the human race will ever produce. Fights breaking out at the counter, lorries full of carbon rod being hijacked on the motorway..the end of angling civilisation as we know it Ron..

Recycling is the new thing, send in your old clapped out 13 metre pole and have it made into a pair of barbel rods,a carp stalker, and a nice waggler rod

Angling Times chose to make this the story of the week.

Have they been influenced by the tackle trade to get us to go out and start a buying spree before things get really tight?

Sir Richard of The Lea?

Some of my contacts in the tackle trade tell me that anglers are just not buying enough tackle to keep the UK industry bouyant.

So let's start a scare story!

It's genuine Ron. I've been trying to get the trade to open up about it for a while.
I suppose some will try and absorb it but there just isn't enough profit in fishing gear to survive a huge hike in carbon prices.
Mind you, with the things I've seen recently it's quite evident you only need a hand line and a gill net to be successful on our rivers. Who needs a rod?

If this is the case and rods become too expensive it could be a source of income for Iraqi's. Just think of all those burnt out tanks lying around the battlefields of Iraq and all bristling with tank aerials all we will need then is a ready supply of bent pins. hahaha!

Ron, It?s just as well I've had my spending spree and with Greys I get a life time guarantee so they will just have to do till I pop my clogs.

bear in mind that the 'carbon' manufactured in the Far East is old technology

the current high tech carbons are made in the usa and a couple of uk companies - the technology cannot be exported because of the military applications

there have been scare stories about price rises of up to 60% but they have never materialised - i had a chat with a uk manufacturer and he reckoned no more than ?10/rod in a worse case scenario - more price problems if fuji upped their prices!

even on a top range rod the percentage cost of the blank (in material terms)is very low

If, and a very big if, this were to happen and prices of carbon rods became prohibitive just think how much people like Peter could make from their stock. Peter Jacobs alone could keep the south east going for a while to say nothing of Woody and I daresay there are a few more on here. Can't see it happening myself but stranger things have happened at sea, as the saying goes.
