08 September, 2006 - FISHING ports along the North Yorkshire Coast have been warned to be ready for possible floods this weekend because of exceptionally high tides.
The local council at Scarborough, which looks after harbour matters said they could be the highest for more than a decade and could cause severe flooding. It said it may have to close some roads in the area -and has stressed the dangers of part time fishermen venturing out in rough weather. Local fishing vessel owners have also been advised to ensure their boats are securely moored if they are in port. More unusually-high tides are forecast for next month , and the Environment Agency confirmed there would be high tides in the area. Fishing ports further down the coastline like Bridlington, Hull and Grimsby should not be affected.
It said high pressure was expected over the North Sea by Saturday but severely bad weather was not likely. However, fishermen and leisure craft skippers should be prepared for all eventualities. A spokesman said: ?We will be monitoring the situation all the time and it is always advisable for people to take precautions. "People with concerns should consult our website or our Floodline for the latest information," he added. Further high tides are expected between October 7 and October 10.
The high tides are being caused by a rare alignment of the sun, moon and earth, combined with the autumn equinox - when the earth is closest to the sun. Experts are predicting high water could be around thirty five percent higher than average. In Scarborough, the council is warning fish shop owners and other sea-front traders of the dangers.
