Just had an email from my mate Geoff Cooper who is the Irish correspondent for Keith Arthurs radio spot plus numerous other forums.
Geoff is a terrific bloke as anyone who has been in his company will tell you.
Geoffs friend John Astell who before retiring to Ireland was legal executive with the British Law Society was driving by Garradice Lake near Ballyconnel when he noticed a Land Rover and some netting activity taking place.
Thinking it was foreigners taking fish he stopped only to find out they where from the Irish Central Fisheries Board, fish where being held in large buckets and quite a few roach where dead and bream had their gill plates ripped off, pike where thrown back dead.On asking how the damage had occured he was told gill nets had done the damage.
Geoff had been trying to catch chub for an article for the angling Times from the Inny and three attempts have proved friutless meanwhile Matt Nolan from the fisheries board is quoted in the local paper that the arrival chub that swim in Irish rivers and lakes could bring about the extinction of trout in Irish waters over a twenty year period.
It just beggars belief, the method in their madness

Gill netting is barbaric and should be banned. This has been proposed at our Southern Region EA's RFERAC meeting. The EA are taking it onboard and did say that there are only a very few occasions when conditions dictate this method of fish removal. Maybe the angling powers in Ireland can bring pressure to bear. I sincerely hope so.

Terry according to Geoff its the Irish authorities that are doing the gill netting.
They do not want chub in their rivers and no doubt any caught will be killed
