A warning has been issued to fishermen following a spate of fishing tackle thefts over the summer.

The latest police figures for the west area reveal that between April 1 and August 24, there have been 24 incidents of fishing tackle being stolen.

Most of the thefts have occurred since July, with a majority taking place in the Blaby and New Parks area.

Pc Steve Day, the west area's crime reduction officer, said the equipment was often stolen and then sold off at car boot sales or on ebay, and urged fishermen to tighten up their security.

He said: "Securing your shed or garage might not be the first thing on your mind when you think about crime prevention.

"However, as they house an array of sports and garden equipment, including fishing tackle, as well as power tools, security measures should certainly be put in place."

He added: "The value of property inside sheds and garages is often far higher than expected and the contents can be attractive to thieves.

"I would also urge that house hold contents insurance also covers property housed in outbuildings."

Anyone with information about stolen fishing tackle should call 0116 222 2222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
