What tips and hints can you give to someone who is completely new to Spodding.

What do they need equipment wise, and how do they use it once they've got it all ?

I'll have a go at answering it Steph, it is just that it needs a bit of thought and a little research here on FM

I'll have a crack at it later on today.

Use braid,

Always check tip ring incase braid/line is wrapped around...............CRACK,

Dont overfill the spod,

Use a bit of dry groundbait to plug the spod to prevent spillage,

Think do i really need to use one? Is there a better way of getting the bait out? Do you need to put this much bait out?

Here is what I use Steph;

A dedicated Spod Rod (Fox) with a T/C of something like 5½lbs with a Big Pit Reel for ease of casting and good line retrieve. I use a Leader of Arma Chord 50lb tied directly to my main floating braid line.

I use different Spods for different baits; boilies, spod mixes, Euro Mix etc., and always a roughly dry mix of groundbait as a 'filler' which helps prevent bait loss and a lot of mess when casting. I use that too if spodding out a lot of maggot or caster as well.
Try not to over-fill the spod as it will not cast as accurately as one that let's say, 75% full.

I use floating braid as it is a lot easier to recover than sinking braid which will take a lot longer too. I do use floating braid however on my Marker rod and pretty much for the same reason.

Like so many things in fishing Steph it is a lot easier to 'show' someone how to do it than to describe it in words.

Ian Gemson did a video on both Spodding and Marker floats, take a look at: Smart Carping Blog - Coaching Online: HOW TO: Spod

Hope this helps.

The best advice I can give is to ditch the common or garden spod and use a Spomb.
As with all forms of loose feeding, accuracy is the key. You don't usually want small patches of feed scattered over a wide area.

Better still, get yourself a Gardner pocket rocket, which can be cast on a regular carp rod. No need to get a special rod, or reel, or braid, or shock leader or anything else. Try it. Get the feel for it. You'll soon enough master the basics of getting bait out sixty or seventy yards with reasonable accuracy. If the waters you fish demand more range, or larger quantities of bait, and the method appears to pay off, then you can consider buying dedicated kit, safe in the knowledge that you'll know just how to use it, and when.

Steph,

You can find videos I think here on FM for both Ian's Spodding and Marker Float articles. If not, then definitely on Smart Carping.

Peter ...... i must say that i am very impressed with the layout of the "Smart carping Blog" there is quite a lot of informative and instructive info with some excelleent visual aids too.

I'm not a carp angler but i do use hair rigs and such when i feeder fish at times and i can see some it being adapted to suit over techniques as well.

Much appreciated for sharing it with us.

Steph.

Steph one of my mates uses a beach caster to do his spodding and casts out a fair lenth and weight (groundbait) with no problems what so ever.

1) a strong rod.
2) strong line long enough to reach.
3) a spod.
4) stuff to put in the spod.

That'll get you started IF you ever decide to start doing it.

hi steph,if you can't find the info u need try utube there are some very usefull vid's on there from all the "top carp boys" and a lot of the carp tackle specialists like nash ,korda and fox. by the way there's ****** all cheeky about asking a question, after all u know "if you don't ask you don't get" it's just working out whether the information you gather is any good or relevant to your situation or not. tight lines.:):):)
