An excellent article Richard.

I fished Avington a few times many years ago (in the Sam Holland era) and had very similar experiences.

The sheer size of some of those Rainbows really shook me. On my third visit I finally landed one of 15lb 10oz and saw several other bigger fish on the bank (they were giants).

I had the great fortune to meet and talk to Bill Sibbons a few times at Damerham lakes and it was he that patiently showed me how to present nymphs at the right depth (once I'd worked out how deep the devils were feeding at!). That information increased my catch rate significantly.

Avington is without doubt the ultimate trout fishing brothel.

But worth a trip on odd occasions.

I wish it were closer.

I beg to differ Paul

It's the putting fish back(fishing for sport) that the anti's dont like ......

They don't mind fishing for the pot ....

Quite right Ed.

There are many trout fishing waters where the return of live fish to the water is banned.

Avington is one such place.

Fishing on the Thames today, catching a few redfins (perch) and wished I had a pound for every passer by that said -

"Do you kill any?"
"Caught your supper?"
"That'll just fit on a dinner plate."
"Where will you put it until you get it home?"

but the best came from a six year old -
"Can I stroke it?"

Straying off the thread here (as I do ), I work alongside a real animal fan. He used to wind me up about fishing being cruel etc.
Through my telling him about my various experiences I've had with nature (otters, mink, kingfishers...) and being able to show that I know about the natural world through first hand experience, rather than the telly, I think I've managed to convince him that many anglers, or at least I, don't just care about the fish.
Maybe it starts that way, but you soon get to see the whole picture and appreciate the whole experience.

points well made gents, it just doesn't look that pretty compared to the regular content of FM and i'm sure some would react to it negatively. Not at all sure about references to porn and brothels while we're at it..

Are they the same people, who go to Morrisons fish counterand/ or read the Sun?

And the vast majority of fish you see on a fish counter don't get the proper humane treatment of being belted between the eyes with a heavy blunt instrument.

They are left gasping, to die slowly in the hold of a ship; and are often gutted when still alive.

Unfortunately the effective dispatching of a trout with a heavy priest can cause bleeding from the gills.

Could the Monk be classed as 'a heavy priest'???

To be honest I rarely fish waters that encourage kill all you catch. I release the vast majority of wild fish I catch. However at Avington you have no choice, and to be honest, I enjoy eating trout, especially ones I've caught myself. You'll notice from the pictures that the perch have been handled well with wet hands and all went back fine.

From what I understand Ron they've been there a long time. I saw them that day and some of them are none too small!
