which rod to buy

having fished with split cane for over 50 years,i have to resort to buying a carbon rod as my shoulders and back can not take it anymore ,:whim looking for a rod 13 or14 ft for long trotting with a pin, any sugestions as to which rod to buy? many thanks

How about a John wilson avon quiver or drennan series 7 - either rod would suit your style of fishing if its chub you are after.

Still use a MK4 Avon cane rod these days - still nice to use

Drennan rods are very nice, myself being a recent convert, I purchased an older model namely the Drennan Super Specialist Duo, !2ft, 1.5lb tc rod. You will not find a better rod for chub. Only problem is they are blooming hard to find these days.

For trotting for chub I'd go for a heavyish match rod. Length depends on the rivers you're fishing and typical swims - if you're doing a lot of far bank work then a 15ft rod might be best.

Have a look at some of the carp match rods that will take reel lines up to about 6lb. These often have a nice fine tip which allows use of fine hook lengths when the chub are being a bit finiky, but they will have plenty of poke for hauling Mr Chub out from under bushes if necessary. I've got a Garbolino Carp Match which is a superb trotting rod. Some of the specialist trotting rods are excellent too, but they tend to be a bit more expensive and aren't a lot better than typical carp match rods. The Shakespeare Mach 11 and 111 range always get good reviews.

The shimano range of "match" rods that have the "fa" (fast action) tag have masses of back bone so may be eminently suitable. I use my hyperloop 390 fa when float fishing for carp and have had carp to 10lb without problem on it.

I really like the Middy "Baggin machine" 13-14ft Waggler. Its a quality rod, soft tip but plenty of back bone to it.
The optional mid section means it can be fished at either 13 or 14 ft depending on your preferences/situation Its pretty light, certainly easy to manage on a long days fishing and in my opinion If you can pick it up for £45 you've got yourself a bargain.
