As is clear, scientific names are clumsy and well, difficult to pronounce and spell in my predicament..... But what would interesr me is are there any unusual regional names or terms used to name common fish?

e.g. Dace = Silver dart
salmon = Silver tourist? (or is that seas trout)
Chub = logger head, chavender, chevin
Bream = slabs
Roach = livebait:D

etc..........

Not regional but me and Big Phil always refer to small roach as either "scribes" or "mumfords" after Ray Mumford who was a bit of a small fish expert in his match fishing hey day.

Skippy As I mentioned in an earlier thread, since moving house some two years ago, I am having a sort out of my old angling books and the few magazines I retained. I came across an interesting article about fishing for chub on the Avon, by Ray Mumford, using a 7’ rod in the first edition of Creel, July 1963 Drawings by BV of course!.

West London Wide Boy parlance of old:

Pike - "Snapper"

Trout (only fit to be bait-fished for - and removed, then fried and eaten - from some posh bloke's water) - "Spotty" / "Spotties".

Plus Stripey / Stripies, of course...

"Billy", for a perch,

"dog roach", large roach,

"charlie" large carp

"bin lid"/"slab" big bream

from the glossary of leigh (lancashire) fishing jargon.
