Rogue anglers to blame for 200 fish deaths

The fishermen were trying to rid their favourite fishing spot of tiny roach so they could concentrate on the bigger fish.

They scooped them up and transported them to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal at Diggle.

But the method of handling the fish led to their deaths.

In late August when the fish were found, pollution was at first suspected.

But tests by the Environment Agency proved negative and further testing was arranged by scientists.

An agency said: ?Someone has illegally put the fish into the canal and the bad handling of the fish has caused their death.

?It seems someone was trying to get rid of the fish and has dumped them there. We do not know who is responsible.?

?For any movement of fish, people need to come to the Environment Agency for permission and advice on how to handle them.?
