A Cornish freshwater fishing club has taken out a mortgage to help buy lakes where its members fish.
Roche Angling Club said it had no option after the 36-acre plot of land at Wheal Rashleigh went up for auction.

Clay company Imerys had leased the land to Roche Fishing Club for 30 years and had offered the club first refusal.

After failed lottery bids, the club sold membership rights nationwide to part-fund the deal, and got the loan for the rest of ?100,000 it needed.

The club said it would work with organisations including English Nature and the Environment Agency to protect and enhance the land near the Eden Project.

The lake at Wheal Rashleigh is about 9.5 acres in area and has perch, roach, eels, some trout and pike.
