with carp fishing bait becoming stupidly expensive (excluding particles which are very cheap if prepared at home), i have a challenge for you lot.

the challenge is you have a maximum of £10 to spend on bait which can only e bought from a supermarket/grocery store and you can't spend the money on any specialist fishing bait (eg from tackle shops or particles).

the bait must be enough for a 24/48 hour session or longer if you are adventurous!

hopefully this thread will come up with some new cheap aits I am yet to use!

Hugo,

I have been buying most of my bait from Supermarkets for years.

Chick peas, black eyed beans, lintils, all around £1.50 a bag. Sweetcorn, (Tesco's own) has a great smell and large colonel's, 37 pence a tin, Rice, Tuna, luncheon meat.

For £10 i could fish for a week. Don't forget the cake making section for some great flavour's.

big bags of frozen sweetcorn are cheep and you can take out as much as you need and leave the rest in the freezer

Dog and cat chews make good hook baits and pva stocking fillings

Sweetcorn, Luncheon meat, Bread, ..... you can buy a lot of bait for £10.00p if you're clever about it.

i to buy all my carp bait at the supermarket. alot of it at aldi's. tinned corn, cat food, bread. and for a doughbait i make flour, corn meal, jello gelatin" usually strawberry but made some peach flavored last night will try tommorrow." this is boiled in a pint of water , or flavored water, fruit juice. used mango juice with the peach. works very well and makes enough for at least 24 hours with enough for plenty of loose offerings and hookbaits. yes 10 dollars i'm set for at least a week even without the particles. although sweetcorn is my favorite carp bait. if anyone is interested will gladly give you the recipe for the doughbait. would be interesting how it works on your waters.

Marshmellows and sugar puffs for alternative floaters. Crayfish tails (aldi/lidhl) prawns for floatfishing in the margins. Pepparami, various types of beans and pulses. Peanuts (dry roasted/salted). cockles, mussels, whitebait. Brazil nuts. meatballs different types of cheese from the delhi counter, the list is endless. A lot of these baits can work a treat for pressured carp as they will be something they dont often see.

hmmm all of the above. But to add something to the pot, I'd go for a 10kg bag of vitalin dog food and a tin/bag of sweetcorn.

I agree with all of the above, thinking a little more outside the box perhaps why not try a visit to your local asian supermarket.

South Asian stores will have:

Ragi flour (and others) - can be used as a base to make a great paste (as used in Mahseer fishing), combine with crushed hemp, pellets, tuna etc. It can even be made to stay on the hook longer than any boilie ;)

Chickpeas and other pulses can be bought in bulk usually at a fraction of the cost of tinned stuff from the other big supermarkets. Prepare 'em at home with any combination of flavours, colours and spices you like. :)
Besan flour can be used to make Ladoo or Kofta.

You can also try other sweet baits - tinned Gulab Jamun in syrup are excellent. Although you will eat more than you use as bait.
Similarly you can also try rasgulla (sweet syrupy cheese and semolina based).

South East Asian will have:

Fish and Oyster sauces, great for groundbaits and glugs.

Balachan (blocks of dried shrimp), shrimp paste and dried shrimp.

Sogster,

In my local Tesco there is an Asian section, ( well thats what I call it), it has just about everything you said in it, and some of the Spices will blow your head off, so go careful when adding to your bait.

I found a great way to colour bait Red, Sweet and Sour sauce from my local take away, and it gives it a little taste also.

Stilton cheese, most fish love it, ( I hate the Stuff), and Barbel go mad for it. I don't add anything to mine just use as it is.

I'm with Scott on this one. Vitalin and more Vitalin. This stuff, with thought can be used for, method mix/groundbait, pastes, boilies and bulking out anything else you have bought. The best bit is, the fish love it.

Ray your right, they probably have this section in most big supermarkets now, mine even has a polish one!

However it is cheaper by far to go to a dedicated Asian grocers - as I do, or failing that try your local branch of B&M (used to be woolworths). The range will be bigger and the qaulity a lot better.
