hi fellow anglers
im having a bit of trouble choosing a suitable all round rod to tackle a few species like barbel, chub and medium sized carp although if a thirty pounder came along with a bit of coaxing the rod could take it
ive looked at the fox specimen ect read the reviews on this site and decided there not for me, also i must mention that i dont want to spend a fortune on a branded rod which like you have all mentioned is getting produced by a smaller company but is a lot cheaper?? i hope this all makes sense.at the mo greys prodigy is 1st choice

Why is the Fox not for you and the greys your top choice?

I thought the Fox twin top avon felt a nice rod and the greys rods a bit unbalanced.

But plenty of good anglers on here love the Greys.

Guess i'm sayin that only you can chooose what you will really feel ok with.......but the price range you are talking of has some great rods on offer.

i must admit the after sales service is swinging my decsision at the moment but there are loads of rods to choose from and being relitively new to course fishing im asking advice and opinions of more expeirienced anglers who have tried and tested the gear before i part with me money cheers for the help.

I would certainly go for an Avon/Quiver twin. If cash is an issue why not the John Wilson (whatever its called). My mate has one and its a lovely rod...

Fox barbel special thoroughly excellent.

My choice if I had to limit myself to one coarse rod for the rest of my life.

Second choice ? the Fox Barbel Float rod.... :)

Third.... 2.5lb tc Fox XT Warrior... (would prefer a 2.25 lb tc but they don't make one that weight)

I have the 1.25 TC Shimano Technium Specialist avon/quiver and cannot fault it.

A friend has the John Wilson 11/13ft Avon Quiver system and swears by it. Can pick this one up for around ?70

Either would be a good all rounder.

Go for the old style Wilson avon/quiver. The new multi section thing is a waste of time. This rod was got completely right first time round.

I've got two of the originals, and they are perfect for bream/chub/tench/light carp etc. The only thing they cant do is toss 3 ounces of lead to the horizon, but that's not my cup of tea anyway.

Get onto ebay and pick one up for around ?40.

Evan - why on earth a 2.25lb test curve rod? That is massive overkill for his requirements.

they won't land a 30lb+ carp either i know i tried when one swam off with my tench bait on 6lb line, there was absolutely bugger all i could do with it as it swam off round the island i was on.

they will cope with mid to low 20's at a push but for anything from big roach and perch to double figure carp and barbel they will do it admirably.

especially the original one.

the only problem with the original one is it only has one tip which is too soft for flood conditions on rivers.

this was fixed in the new one but unfortunately they broke just about everthing else about the rod, especially with the extra section in it.

Tri the shimano 1.75lbTC hyperloop barbel rod its superb ive used it for trotting, float fishing, method fishing, waggler fishing feeder fishing and very small scale carp fishing, ive landed carp to 20lb on it you mustn't forget he skill factor though. Bream to 8lb and roach to 2lb 12oz its balanced and if your on a budget its handy too dont pay more than 60quid for one though get on it you be hauling them in

hi mattyboy
your style of fishing sounds very similar to my own one rod to tackle all not heavygear but maximum sport from most sizes of fish, i was mainly in to sea fishing when i lived on the isle of man and used a shimano perfection spinner for most species great sport rock hopping.im now learning the ropes on coarse fishing but i aint buying a rod and gear for each species so wise selection and good advice from you all and ill be specimen hunting very shortly.cheers

Anytime mate just look around dont buy the first one you see shop around for all your tackle. Buy the best you can afford and what you feel comfortable with, tight lines

If you want cheap and cheerful, I can recommend a Shakespeare Borak Twin top, I have one stuck in the back of my jeep, I use it when working away from home, not bothered if it gets busted.

It is robust, has taken some knocking around, I have used it in devon for wrasse fishing off the rocks, barbel off the trent, even derwent roach on the stick.

Its not a glamour rod, but for ?30 it will give you a starter rod that is practical and will land the sizes of fish you are targetting.

hi sgt bash cheers im getting by with a usefull shakespere n.c.i 2.75 test curve slight overkill on the canal but ideal on big waters nice slim rod no decals on it looks and feels like a expensive rod you wouldnt know it was a shakey only paid ?20 new from bosfish but as you gathered im looking for versatility, quality and value ill pay a ton for that! some of the rods mentioned fit the bill at a lot less its a case of hunting them down an feeling them but its been really interesting hearing what you are all fishing with.i can narrow my options down.
