Fish Mastermind

At last, fish have been recognised as clever little buggers.

Mythbusters on BBC2 tonight tested the theory that they only have a 3 second memory and blew it apart.

10 goldfish were put through a riggorous training course, to learn their way through a fish tank maze to get to their food and they passed with flying colours.

I knew they'd pull through.......

How else would they become wary of all my baits and the like if they'd forgotten everything more than 3 seconds ago?

So which species would win an IQ test and why?

chub would win as they memorise each and every snagg within swimming distance they know all the best places to hang out and can spot a baited hook 10yds away and make great generals in the war against anglers whits as they'll use smaller chubletts like porns in a chess game and hang back while they send in the chubletts to test the safty of food and once caught & released will spread the word and warn the other fishes and are clever enough to steal pellets intended for barbel.

This is a difficult one.

It used to be thought that carp were the brainiest fish of the lot, but after many years of fishing for them I am not so sure. I have known them be exasperatingly difficult to ridiculously easy.

I would tend to agree with Chavender and put chub at the top of my list as the cleverest. They main thing with chub is not to scare them or warn them of your presence.

Number two I would put roach - big ones not bits. Once a roach reaches 12 oz or so they can become very difficult to catch.

The easiest fish to catch in British waters other than gudgeon and little perch?

Once you have located them - barbel without doubt. They even oblige by hooking themselves for you.

Another easy fish to catch is a grayling - especially on bait.

My initial thoughts were that it may be a predator. I know chub can come into that category, but what about one that uses smart tactics to fool prey?

There must be some species we know little about that are smarter than chub?

What about something like those snakes that use the tips of their tail to look like a small grub to attract prey, before pouncing on it?

Ron, you must know of some more unusual species from different lands?

Carp are a lot smarter than any of you realise. Seeing that goldfish are related to Carp, just think about this.

In the animal world, every type of animal has a pecking order and a leader.

So one day the king Carp calls for an EGM. He says to all its followers -; We have been feeding on this North bank now for two weeks. Some of us have been caught on anglers baits.

I need a couple of volounteers to go over to the West bank and splash about a bit and do a bit of jumping about. The idea is to get all the one hit wonders to make a mass exodus to the West bank and go scampering off over there like a pack of scarab beetles like a scene from Laura Crofts Tomb Raider.

When they have thrown enough bait in for us (don't touch any of it) come back over here, and join in the free fest in relative safety.

When we have cleaned this area up of bait. Give the ant heads the big wave with your tail to get them back over here. Then we can go over to the west bank and clean up in peace. Easy innit?

chub and eels, rudd as well, but I think they are more elusive than clever. thickest are barbel and roach, if they are in the swim they will soon commit suicide by grabbing your bait.

Yep, Chub, when it commes to clever, they are it!
I considered eels, but when you think about it they aint clever, they just mop up the "left overs"!
Roach? Cleverer than chub? Hmmmm?
Clever, yes! Cleverer than chub? Hmmmm?

If it came to a Mastermind "Final" it would have to be between the roach and the chub.

(Barbel would be dumb and dumbererer!)

Other end of the scale has to be the bream, thickest of the thick. I'm almost convinced the other fish have been taking the pish out of them for years much in the same way we do (in jest) the irish.

i think bream can fit both ends of the scale

some days they can be crafty bugers, you know they are there by the liners but they wont touch anything with a hook in it

other days they loose there brains and hoover up anything in sight
