Anyone use these 4litre mini fridges for storing maggots. They look just big enough to hold 3 or 4 x 1pint boxes or couple 2pint boxes. Do they chill cold enough to lengthen our friend, the maggots life ??

As long as it keeps the temperature between 1 and 5 degrees it will be fine.

My daughter has one. I don't know where the 4l capacity comes from, but you can just get 4 cans of coke in it!

Freshly bought maggots on 'delivery' day should last approx 900 degree/hours, so just do the arithmetic . . . . .

I dont know how long the fridge will last as the ammonia from the maggots wrecks normal fridges in no time if maggots are kept in them in quantity and time,but as a temporary holding place it should be fine in small quantities

If you get your maggots on the day they are delivered to the tackle shop, then they should last approx 900 degree-hours.

So, if you keep them at let's say 5 degrees in a fridge for a day,
then 5x24=120 degree/hours

Then best average life would be (900/120)=7½ days

If it's like mine was - got it for Christmas and it stopped working about May - - in bin - look for a second hand fridge - or one left on a street corner:wh

Your best bet if you've got the room is to buy a second hand fridge. Failing that get an electric cool box. Coleman and Outwell are two makes that spring to mind. I've got the Outwell one and it works fine for beer and the occasional maggot transportation.

One thing to note with these devices is that it's best to switch them off for one hour in every 24. They have a tendancy to fail if you don't.

I've learnt my lesson buying older fridges & freezers. Used to have a couple to hold bait & it worked out they were costing me well over £100 a year to run them. Would only consider an "A" rated modern appliance or something very small.
