A new easily accessible fishing facility has been officially opened by Warrington MP Helen Southworth.

The Environment Agency teamed up with the Meadow View Fishery, near Lymm, and the Warrington Disability Association to build a large angling platform which is accessible to everyone.

The platform has been built with advice from the British Disabled Anglers Association (BDAA) which specialises in helping disabled people enjoy the sport of fishing.

Helen Southworth MP, a member of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of the facility last Friday (6 October).

She praised the facility as an excellent example of a partnership that is making a real difference to people?s lives.

"This is a really fantastic partnership between local people and the Environment Agency and it?s providing a wonderful opportunity for people to enjoy some relaxation on their doorstep, something the whole family can join in with. Whilst angling is recognised as the largest participation sport in England, the vast majority of the public that do not get involved, despite living within a mile or two of a river or lake where fishing is possible," she said.

"The added benefit of these types of fisheries and facilities is that anyone can come along and have a go and, if you don?t want to fish, the surrounding environment is a joy in itself. I would urge everyone to get out and enjoy what is on our doorstep".

This is the second platform of its type built this year. A similar one has been built at the Lakemore Fishery, Haslington, near Crewe.

Environment Agency fisheries officer Andy Eaves said: "We are always looking for new ways of opening up angling to all members of the community and our partnership with Meadow View has meant that, with this specially adapted fishing platform, anyone can go fishing.

"The platform can be used for individual and group coaching sessions and has already been used by children and adults to introduce them to this exciting sport. To date we have introduced over 500 people to angling using these types of facilities.

"We hope that facilitates such as this will encourage more people to take up angling ? a great hobby where you can enjoy the environment. The cost of day?s fishing licence is less than a trip to the cinema and a year?s license is less than a meal for two."
