erm...what i meant was has anyone got any advice on how to get tackle( read rods )to a destination safely on a plane? indeed would it even be sensible to fly with the precious carbon on board?...i think i remember an extendale carry case in a harris lures catalogue some years back? but i'm not sure what size that was.Or whether 'they' would let be on a plane with a six foot case? anyway if asnyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

You an buy special cases or do as i do and use a plastic drainpipe with a bit of pipe lagging foam shoved in each end to stop the rods banging around inside and a bit of gaffer tape to seal the pipe at both ends.

I flew to Ireland with my gear once. I just used the heavy duty plastic rod tubes and a holdall. Put foam in the tubes to wedge the rod steady, taped the cap on and duck taped the holdall to hold everything together.
Mark it as fragile and 'this way up'.

I have been all over the world taking my gear on every trip, I started by using the good old polytube as allready described,I did find that customs tended to cut the seal on the end, then fail to seal again resulting in the rods slipping out,no damage luckily .. I then moved onto an extending rod case as advertised in fishing mags, the customs cut the padlock off, same story... I have recently found out that if you travel, you can get special padlocks from specialist travel suppliers that are called "Coded" padlocks, which airport customs services are supposed to have keys for, they can open the tubes, check contents and re-lock, I dont know if that is what will happen, or if indeed they will just cut them off, it must be worth a try though. If you are a bit unsure about taking gear with you, just take a couple of reels in your luggage and buy a rod at your destination, they are usually cheap enough, and you can wrap them and take them home, if they get damaged, well, as they are cheap it is not the end of the world. The last, and best I think is to invest in a Shimano travel rod, I have one that has 5 sections and fits in a suitcase, no problems at all, you can get them for several applications, other manufacturers also make similar models, I think Shimano fit the bill for me.

Yup, telescopic or multi section rods are the way to go. I've got a KIS rod tube which used to keep my rods safe, but now I just rely on 'travel rods' which fit into a suitcase. Much better!

My local shop hires out a KIS tube that holds 6 rods.

It depends on how much fishing you are going to do. Normally I just take a telescopic carp rod with me. I stick it in a beefed up tube and thus far it has stood up to the baggage handlers.
