usually it's best on a rising tide, from the shore, the fish follow it in you see to get at the newly revealed bait beds.

Nick what area are you fishing?

as CC said 4 hours up and 2 down seems to be most peoples favorite times, but thats not always best.

I have found areas that fish better tide going out, low tide and as the tide starts to come in.

It all depends on the area you are fishing, when you are fishing and for what.

christchurch harbour is a high tide venue, but the pebble beach down by the point fishes well whenever there is a good pull of tide on it always has water by it.
