Just to put you in the picture, the definition of art is a skill that affects human intellect or emotion in some way, as music, literature, painting or sculpture does.

A craft is purely skill in making something such as the ability to perform handiwork. Being a skilled craftsman might influence the ability of a person to create great art, but not always.

But where would you put angling?

Neither craft or art as far as I'm concerned. Both produce an end product from raw materials. A craftsman produces something with a purpose. And artist produces something that has no particular purpose other than an attempt to give enjoyment to whoever experiences the resulting art.

I don't have a problem with angling being considered a sport. It fits well with shooting and hunting in older definitions of what sport was. In fact they were the original sports. However, I don't think shooting, fishing and hunting fits with what a modern definition of sport has become.

Fishing is a hobby, recreation or pastime that can be competitive should you choose it to be so.

A bit subjective that definition Ron. Some art leaves many people cold. Cultural differences apply too. What Chinese people might consider artistic music sounds like a screech to Western ears.
Some angling techniques can be artistic but the most successful are those which are most productive, therefore angling is probably best described as a craft.

But how many times in history have you heard angling described as an art?

Dear old Isaak was for ever calling angling an art.

Dear old Isaak was for ever calling angling an art.

"You are assured, though there be ignorant men of another belief that angling is an art, and you know that art better than others; and that this truth is demonstrated by the fruits of that pleasant labour which you enjoy - when you purpose to give rest to your mind and divest yourself of your more serious business and (which is often) dedicate a day or two to this recreation."

Is Wa.

Concise Oxford Dictionary...

Art..."Human creative skill or application"....."Creative activity"....."Human skill or workmanship as opposed to the work of nature"....."A skill, aptitude, or knack"

Craft..."Skill, especially in practical arts"

So's, I reckon it's a bit of both.........get off that fence Harrison you'll get splinters in your a#se.

Neither art, craft or sport.

It's a past-time or hobby.
