Anglers taking part in next year?s National Federation of Anglers (NFA) Division I national competition on the New Junction Canal and South Yorkshire Navigation will enjoy improved facilities thanks to the support of British Waterways Yorkshire. Over ?6,000 has been spent on improving the access, creating and upgrading car parks, putting in gates and locks and carrying out trackworks following consultation with Doncaster and District Angling Association, the organisers of the competition. British Waterways will also be helping with health and safety guidance.

Over seven hundred anglers will be taking part in the annual event on August 11 next year where anglers can expect to catch roach, perch, chub, skimmers and even eels.

The improvements being carried out are part of British Waterways Yorkshire?s new Fishery Action Plan which is aiming to encourage angling on its 432 kilometres of waterway.

Janet Baverstock, Service Manager for British Waterways, Yorkshire said: ?Angling is a sport we very much want to encourage along our waterways and we are pleased to engage with Doncaster & District on this competition which is a high profile event in the fishing calendar.?

Colin Childs from Doncaster & District Angling Association said: ?We are delighted that we were successful in persuading the NFA to hold the competition in this area and also with the suppport we are getting from British Waterways. Angling is one of the oldest sports there is and the improved access to the water will make the event so much better for the participants.?
