Tough ask this, but I'll fire the question anyway!

I'm looking for a pair of rods. They should be suitable for large roach or perch, tench also. Shoud be able to deal with the odd rogue carp that might come along. Lines around 6lb. Length 12 ft (ideally), 11ft at a pinch. Maybe 1.04 to 1.08 test curve?

There are plenty of rods on the market that fulfil the above criteria. But, they cost the earth! I'm hoping to get something on a budget of around 40 quid each rod. Any ideas? Or maybe someone has some gathering dust somewhere...

Thanks

Ric,
I think I'd be looking at the old Daiwa Powermesh Avons (or similar from Daiwa) if I were you. Probably an Ebay job though.

Good call...and there are a couple on e-bay at the moment but I doubt you'll get them for £40.

They, and the variations on the theme (Powermesh X etc), have not been selling particularly well recently. I thought I did well to get (not on ebay) a pair of the original Powermesh, in immaculate condition, for a hundred quid. However, that seems slightly above the going ebay rate. Not like a few months back where a single rod sold for well over a hundred quid.

I've seen the Shakespeare Mach 1 XT Specialist being advertised at 25 quid. Anyone handled these, any good?

shakspear make good rods and for the style of fishing you are looking to do i would imagine they would suite you down to the ground.
untill a couple of years ago i used to use dam quicksilver leger rods. 9' and real soft through action, they allowed me to play a bream or a roach and still land the odd rogue double figure carp.

As said earlier, the old Daiwa powermesh avons (PMS 112)will do all you ask, I have had barbel over fourteen on mine as well as carp over twenty three lbs with no problems whatsoever, At the "smaller" end of the fish spectrum I have also had roach over two lbs when using them. My only reserve about the pair I bought were that the cork butts were (for me personally) too short and they had flat spots along their length that just didnt suit me or the rod itself in my opinion so I had them lengthened by Sheffield rod maker Pete Evans who also took out the flat spots making them an even better bit of kit than originally.
The thing about these rods is the wall thickness, I think you could accidentally drive over them in the car and other than damaging the runners would be almost unscathed-- perfect to match with a mitchell 300 as they are also bombproof.
Both of mine (I bought a matching pair) are now in my garage not having been used for almost seven or eight years, I must resurect them one day.

No, I am all ready for the morning being dropped off at the bankside early, got extra bait being delivered to me at the bankside (courtesy of the wife) . I watch very little television and have a very set medication routine and a condition which causes me not to sleep very much 4 hours is amazing I usually sleep in slots of two to three hours. I am learning to touch type at the moment which would have you rolling on the floor laughing if you saw it, but its good practice as I want to have another go at writing a story hopefully a better one. I have a lot to fit in in the next couple of years and don't intend to waste a moment. I've tested maybe 30 rods in the past 3 years and about a dozen reels just for the fun of it.
