There is a very rare freshwater fish that only exists exclusively in one place - located somewhere in the British Isles.

What is the fish called?

Where does it reside?

What does it feed on?

What is the biggest caught by rod and line?

There is a rare one, the axolot, that looks a bit like your avatar Corky.

I thought it would be the Gwyniad from Llyn Tegid. Don't know the largest size caught - I think it's illegal to fish for them. They eat Plankton, Insects etc.

Am I close?

Well done Mr Tyler and Bloodtype.

It's the Gwyniad (Coregonus pennantii). It is a memeber of the Coregonus genus, which also includes the vendace, schelly and powan.

This fish is a relic of the ice age and unique to Llyn Tegid (Lake Bala).

It feeds on plankton and is rarely caught on rod and line (biggest recorded is 2lb).

It's existence is threatened by the Ruffe, which was introduced to the lake artificially in the 1980s and eats the fry and eggs.

As a conservation measure, gwyniad eggs were transferred to Llyn Arenig nearby.
