NEW changes to laws which govern salmon and sea trout fishing along the River Ribble are being proposed by the Environment Agency.
The existing Net Limitation Order restricting the number of commercial net licences expires in 2007. Changes are being proposed to protect future stocks of salmon and sea trout and ensure fish populations remain healthy.
Talks have already taken place with representatives of net and rod users and the Environment Agency has been given the go-ahead by Environment Secretary David Milliband to advertise its proposals for further comment.

Under the new regulations, rod anglers will be allowed to kill a maximum of two salmon a year and the number of net licences will reduce from six to two when holders give up their licences.
