Who Says Barbel Rods Don't Need a Quiver Tip?

Hmm..... Can't argue with the verdicts on the rods, but any Barbel angler who doesn't have a rod with a quiver tip is going to lose out in certain situations.

Quiver tips are very useful for fishing upstream and for fishing close in in times of low flow. OK if you want to fish standard carpbelling tactics go ahead, but at least give yourself some options!

We're in danger of becoming identikit specimen anglers with no difference in approach between Carp, Barbel and Pike anglers. Bring back the quiver tip: you know it makes sense!

They could make them an optional extra.

Or an alternative - "Standard top or quiver, Sir?".

Sean - I agree. There are times when I'd rather be using a quivertip when barbelling, athough most of the time I find they're not necessary.

There's a great article by Graham Elliott on BFW about barbelling using quivertips but I can't find it!

Then they wonder why I take the pi$$ out of them as much as I do.

There have been times in the past when I have thought I might be better off with a quiver tip rather than the Avon top which I normally use for barbel. On occasions you get tiny indications that may or may not show better on a quiver tip but if that happens now I carefully get hold of the line and feel for the bite, generally it turns out to be a bit of weed caught up or small fish nibbling at the bait.

Cold weather can sometimes result in shy biting barbel but in general I reserve the quiver tip for chub fishing.

But why not have say, the Shimano Catana retail at ?59.99 and you can get a separate quiver tip for ?20?

Honour is satisfied.

I'm sure Shimano would shift an awaful lot more rods at ?60 than they will charging ?80.

I can appreciate one difficulty, not knowing how many extra quiver tops to order and with the likelyhood of them not supplying as many, the price of each quiver may then rise as a result.

I appreciate that some barbel anglers still want a quivertip, but if they learned to use their fingers properly they'd find they didn't need one:)-)

As fas as upstream legering is concerned then I can see a need for one - if your rod doesn't have a flexible enough tip to put a slight bend in it. If you upstream leger the idea is to just hold bottom, so that when a fish picks up the bait it dislodges the lead and the rod tip (or quivertip) straightens. In my experience of upstream legering this is obvious enough when you're fishing without a quivertip, and is very obvious when touch-legering.

The same applies when I'm fishing close in. I sit with my hand on the rod with the line coming from the bale arm roller and over my index finger.

Now if we were talking chub, with their repertoire of bites, then that's another debate entirely and I would be all for using a quivertip.

But, fair do's, if someone feels more comfortable using a quivertip for barbel then buy a rod that offers one. I reckon though that there are not enough barbel rods that don't offer the quivertip option, and if they didn't they would sell considerably cheaper.

And I still contend that the majority of barbel anglers don't want one, which means there are far too many barbel rods priced higher than they need to be to cover the cost of the quivertip section.

I prefer to fish the quivertip having caught my pb Trent barbel on it. That fish gave me a bite which I could have sworn was the little tap taps of a chub bite. At first I left it, because the chub have a habit of mouthing the bait. Then a couple more slight knocks on the quiver I decided to strike, expecting a stubborn fight of a small chub or no fish at all, suddenly all hell broke loose as that big barbel powered off downstream.

Not your usual barbel bite, I grant you, but I believe those bites were down to a combination of the conditions, bright sunshine and maybe an old wise barbel who had been caught before on pellets and was sucking up and blowing out the bait.

Now, would I have seen those little knocks without the quiver, maybe if I'd been fishing a bite alarm but I prefer to fish without one.

I also find the quivertip more sensitive for those little trembles on the line as the barbel hover over the bait, just before it pulls the rod tip round.

Graham, it's a bit difficult touch legering with two rods at once!

On venues where space allows, where bites are few and far between and I don't intend to move too much, I prefer to use two rods.

Having said that, I still mainly use avon type tops because they are easier to use with a baitdropper and I'm fed up with breaking the ends of quivertips.

I'll go along with that Matt, but I rarely use two rods when barbel fishing. Nothing against fishing two rods at all, but most of the time I prefer just the one.

Anyone waggled the new Torrix Specialist from Harrisons yet? 12 foot two piece with 2lb butt section and top, plus optional 1.75lb top (I think?). Weighs a lot less than the Chimera 2 but performs even better apparently.
Suits you sir!
Dear Santa, more than any other bit of tarted tackle, what I really want for Xmas is....

Blimey i thought i was alone in using quivertips for Barbel!!.
I certainly know a few occasions where my sensitive tip has caught me Barbel, where if i`d have been using my "top" i`m certain i`d have missed those bites.

Bluddie hell Graham, being a bit controversial there aren't you!!

Those were the days, my uncles refused to let me have a rod rest until I was about 30yo!

The reviews were excellent, I like the format, very informative and direct.
