the National Assocation of Specialist Anglers no longer exists, it along with SACG evolved into the SAA Budgie

Just a coincidence that this has been braught up I'm sure.
I was reading an article last night from the late 90's by a well respected angler who quetioned the sudden appearence of Wels catfish that are being caught from waters hitherto unknown to contain them. And we are talking of 30's 50's, a 60, plus a 97 pound monster that was caught in November 96.

What he was talking about was illegal stocking and should they be classed as records. But because an offender has to be caught in the act of actually introducing these or any other fish, they will remain quite legal captures/records prosecution or not.

He then went on to say does this really matter? Judging by the speed in which some Big name anglers zoom off to catch the latest biggie , apparently not.

Well once I had answered Yes to most of the "Questionaire" it was obvious that I was!

So I went to look at the Top 10/50 lists instead.Im a bit embarrased to admit that it was for a bit of a ego trip/pick me up as I was feeling a bit down.I used to apear on a couple of the species Top 50's and there were some others I could have if I had publicised the catchs along with a couple of guys I fished regularly with.In fact only one of my entrys was publicised by me so God knows where they got the info from on the others!

Alas I now no longer feature on any of them! and even worse even my "secret" captures included woul;d only have got me on two!!

It was interesting though in some ways to see how the lists had changed (not really looked at them since the very last NASA do!)

Others were very sad.The Catfish one especially. To say the true English fish on the list were in the minority would be a bit of an understatement. The Catfish world has really gone to rack and ruin in one way yet grown/improved imensely in others,er depending on your point of view that is.Dont know wether the people who brought this about should be proud or ashamed.

Any way weve often disscussed how some species have definately shot up in size over the last two decades.Weve debated till the cows come home about nitrogen enrichment, boillies, global warming and even cormmorants being responsible for this. All good though.

But now the question that all this really raises. Is the Catfish situation good or bad? Should we learn lessons from it and repeat or avoid doing this with other species (carp are obviously the most likely candidate allthough several of our species do grow bigger abroad) what do you think?
