Today i picked up a Korum brochure from my local tackle shop and a Shakespeare one... I must say i do love everything that Korum do, i've ticked of practically all the book of things i aim to get. Things like the rucksacks and holdhalls are well thought about!

Who's your favourite?

I don't have a favourite tackle manufacturer as no one supplier is really capable of producing everything I might require.

If I look at the tackle I own I find the following:

Harrison, Daiwa, Shimano, MAP, Drennan, Hardy, Greys, Snowbee, Shakespeare, Fox, Preston, ABU, Masterline, JW Young, Fishrite, Korum, Kryston, Wychwood, Middy, Milo, Owner, Kamasan and a few more besides.

I'm a bit like Ron (although much better looking!) in that I've got a too much takle to count. But if I look at my favourite rod and the reels I use most often they are all made by Diawa. A close second comes Abu because of their superb multipliers and my oldest reel, a Cardinal C4 bought in 1989 in Bay City, Michigan. Just prior to that all my tackle was stolen so I had to start from scratch.

"I've seen Graham's bits"

It's amazing how rumours start (with a little bit of careless cutting & pasting).

Korum and Fox are delivering some fine ranges of luggage at the moment as well as lots of good "bits & pieces" you wonder how you ever managed without all this time (good marketing).

Okuma seem to have it right at the moment, certainly delivering good products at sensible vfm prices.

Korum is very clever indeed. Not my thing at all, but created a whole new niche.

If they got into pike fishing with their approach I reckon we'd get some really interesting ideas.

My fave is Marvic, an independent Norfolk company, not sure if it's still going but they made pike rods that were sex on legs to hook a fish on and I still love using mine.

I have other rods I now use from the boat, mainly because I seem to be fishing heavier and heavier these days. They're good, they do the job, they cost a third what the Marvics did but they're soul-less and mass-produced in a factory by people who've probably never even seen a pike.

Rods i love my Greys. Reels are Shimano. Centrepin is Okuma. Luggage is Nash and Shimano. Acessories are from Chub, Fox, JRC, Kryston, ESP and a few others i dare say.

I am with Ron no one manufacturer makes the best of every bit of tackle required and long may that be. Competion leads to inavation which is good for all of us.

Free Spirit would be my least favourite brand - overpriced cheap Far East blanks and a dire build quality eg

rings not lined up
poorly fitting spigots/overfits
revolving reel seats
poor rings
etc

for their prices you could get Harrisons - my favourite

recommended manufacturers

luggage - Cotswold Aquarius
multipliers - ABU and Shimano
fly rods - House of Hardy
clothing - Sportschief (Canada)
lines - Berkeley and Power Pro (braid)
hooks - Partridge (game) and Carp r Us/ESP

Sage, Snowbee, Patagonia and William Joseph are my favourites at the moment, and will probably remain so for a long while.

Mine's a collection from all over. Horses for courses, choose what you think is best at the price you can afford for that purpose.

There's not much that you can say is real rubbish on the market these days, for if there was, it wouldn't stay around for too long. You can nit-pick at most items and say this should be longer, or that should be tighter, but overall it's mostly ok.

Wendy, you'll be very happy with anything Preston or Korum supply. It is A1 quality. I just have a problem with single-leg rings - bend 'em and break 'ems, but fortunately my Korum float rod is triple-legged throughout!!!

the only problem with Fox is that in my experience when you want spare parts etc they are not good!

wanted a replacement quiver tip - for the specialist rod and after 9 months still no joy

if companies make what they sell you get a better after sales service - all Fox gear is outsourced

btw missed two good manufacturer off my list

Brollies and Bivvies - Aqua - NOT trakker
alarms - Delkim

Funny thing is Nick, when I snapped my top 1.5 section on the Fox Kevlar barbel,it was replaced by return on contacting them direct!

Frothey, no need to brag )

I use various companies products,

Chub (Pod, Butt Rests, Rod rests, luggage, Tackle Box)
Daiwa (Rods, Reels, line)
E.C.G. (luggage)
Fox (Terminal tackle , Alarms, line)
Kryston (Hooklength material, mainline)
Masterline (Rod, Reel)
Maver (luggage)
Nash (Hangers)
Okuma (Reels)
Pro Performance (Rods)
Relum (Brotel)
Ron Thompson (Rod, Reel)
Shakespeare (Rods, Whip, Pole)
Shimano (Rods, Reels, line)
Wychwood (luggage, Rods, Reels, Terminal tackle)

Off the top of my head, it depends what I'm after and how much I can affoard to spend at the time. I didn't use to have a favourite, that's why it's so long a list. But I have been leaning towards, Chub, Wychwood, Kryston and fox for recent years as I replace or see something I need.)

where to begin?

I love my Shimano rod and reel, but also love my Preston rod and Okuma reel.

My Maver pole is high up there too

I have a varied selection and would find it hard to pick a true favorite!
