Hi guys, sorry if this has been covered before. I'm going to buy a lure rod soon for general lure fishing. I'm gonna used a fixed spool reel with 30pound braid. I fish spinner baits, spoons and plugs up to probably 50-60g (thats a guesss). Can you recommend a rod?

Daiwa Vulcan 9' - light, crisp action and plenty of backbone.

They're also quite cheap at the moment, I got one for ?35.

Don't get a sloppy rod, you can't work lures properly and a lot of fish come off.

There are also a lot of second hand lure ropds about at the moment, presumably because people get fed up with them and buy the next latest thing every five minutes.

Like Chris Bishop, I own a Daiwa Vulcan and I do like it although I've had nothing big on it yet (perhaps tomorrow at Blithfield :)
Unlike deadbaiting rods, I do believe it to be worthwhile spending a few bob on a lure rod. After all, it's going to be in your hand all day (ooer!!)
Consider these things;
Do you need to cast a long way?
Are you going to be using heavy lures?
Do you need to impart action to your lures or just crank them in?
Are you likely to catch big fish?
Are you really serious about lure fishing or is it just something to do between runs?

All of these things will affect your choice. You can cast further with a long rod but with less accuracy. What's more, a long rod is tiring to use, especially if you're using big lures or if you want to twitch or jerk your lures.

Big fish require a stiff, through actioned rod to get them in easily but this type of rod may not be the best for casting light lures.

Ifyou're not serious about lure fishing then you're likely to buy a cheaper rod and cheaper lures. This in turn will make you less likely to catch which will confirm to you that you were right not to invest too heavily in lure fishing. Spending a few bob on the other hand will make you use the tackle more in order to justify your investment. Thus you will catch more and thus you will confirm to yourself that you were right to spend the money.

It seems you can't lose :)

My piking is probably about 70% lure fishing. I'm using overly heavy lures and I pretty much just crank them in but thats a lot to do with the fact that I've been using a carp rod! There is definately a chance of a big fish as there are some big 20s in the lake I fish.

Anyone had any experience with the fox lure rods?

Apart from price there's nowt wrong with Fox rods. If you're interested in buying on line both Brundall Angling & AA Angling, Brundall advertises in Pike & Predator Mag and AA in Anglers Mail, offer good deals.

I've got a spare, as new, ABU Equaliser 10' casts 10 to 40g rod that I would like ?35.00 (including p&p) for. A very versatile & excellent bit of kit, but I don't enjoy using such long rods from a boat.

this is the mags website.. http://www.pikeandpredatorsmagazine.com/

As for the rods....I cast out my lures and place them in rests with an alarm....is this why i don't catch...hehe!

seriously, you should see my fly rod collection!! Each rod has a purpose, like a golf club, you can probably use one rod for a few different purposes, but u get more enjoyment out of using the correct tool.

The Cabelas is a 2 piece rod, so sits rigged up in the car at all times, as does the Lightning. If conditions require a different approach i just nip back to the car and swap rods and lure boxes.

Few people tried a similar approach on the Fen drains - until their gear got nicked from their cars.

Daniel, Wellllll, Fox ( http://www.foxint.com/catalogue-section-products.php?catalogue=foxpredator&section=Predator+Rods ) have a range of lure rods now that may be ideal...they have 4 rods in there Jigmaster range, 2 in there Jerkmaster, 2 in there lure master and 2 in there Spinmaster range...i belive there may be a few more out soon. All have been developed with Mick Brown and are ment to be pretty good for the money (?50-?70). Free Spirit also do a small range of similar rods. Have a word with The Tackle Box in Kent.

Failing that, there are several companies that do specialist gear like Dave Lumb who will probably be able to help.

Hope this helps a little.

To tell the truth, i would have thought u would have more chance of getting a rod in France or Holland :)

Thanks for the info Rob, I will look at the Kent Tackle shops before trying the web sites.
I live in the French Countryside and there is only one small Humting/Tackle shop anywhere near me, (Egg cup full of maggots..75 pence!), and he is mainly a carp specialist. I really do miss the good old Enlish Tackle shops.

If you're going to be in Kent, try to get to "The Freindly Fisherman" Andy Lush's shop in Tunbridge Wells (01892 528677). He has a good selection of casting style rods and good knowledge of what he's selling.
