Lures and floats are often chosen to please the angler rather than the fish. How much does this apply to fly choice?

U ARE RIGHT THERE GRAHAM,ALTHOUGH I WILL FISH SCRAGGY FLIES MORE SO THAN FEATHER PERFECT ONE,,U KNOW THE OLD SAYING THE MORE EATEN IN LOOKS THE MORE IT WILL NE ATE..ITS ALL TO DO WITH CONFIDENCE AT THE END OF THE DAY.....................

And the more scraggy a fly probably the more often it's been around a trout's teeth!

My flies look scraggy when they leave the vice, never mind about being around a trout's teeth.
