Braid or mono for light spinning?

Matt Hayes says that braid is best for spinning for perch as you keep in contact with the fish, and 15lb is about right.

However, Steve Crowther (coursefishermen contributor)mainly uses a supple mono.

Which is best from your experience, or is there a compromise, i.e. a supple low stretch mono?

I prefer braid for it's low stretch qualities which gives excellent sensitivity. It's also low in diameter so it casts better, although this won't be as important on small streams.

However, on clear water it may be worth adding a mono, or better still a flourocarbon, leader. This is not only less visible than mono but lower stretch. I have tried Berkeley Vanish as a main line, but this flourocarbon/mono mix kept on breaking.

I use 6lb braid for ultralight lures in waters where there are no pike, otherwise I step up to 15lbs. With bigger lures, say 3"+ which are often very successful for perch, I'll be using heavier gear still.

Cheers Steve.

How long do you make the fluorocarbon leader? How do you join the braid to it?

About 3ft of flourocarbon connected to a tiny ring, and secured with palomars.
