I am curious to see if anyone has tried this method for coarse fish and if they have what advice can they give.I have been thinking about this for some time and have decided to try and get some information on the subject.
Regards,
Chris.

I do a little but in a very limited way. Generally for Chub and Dace, in my area.

The first fish I ever caught on a fly was a dace on the River Ryton in Notts.

Since then I have caught some 40 species of fish in both fresh and salt water with the fly rod. Last year I caught perch, roach, rudd, and dace with the fly rod.

After 15 years spent teaching fly fishing semi-professionally, I would strongly recommend that if you which to take it up, you get some professional tuition on casting and setting up the tackle. It will save you a lot of money and frustration.

I'd suggest that pike, perch and chub would be your most likely target species.

Certainly chub will take a fly readily. A big black bushy affair has worked for me in the past. I have even dabbed one hanging over a bunch of reeds and watched the chub come up and get it. But you need to keep as still and out of sight as you can. I believe chub and even barble are a bit predatory early on in the season so, anything mimicking small fry can work..a small minnow for example. Dace are a common target on the fly but, you have to be very quick to hook them but, good fun. I believe most fish will take a fly at some time or another as Ron has pointed out. Rudd would be a good target I imagine as they are supposed to be surface feeders but, I havn't often seen them do so. Wet fly fishing is something I would have liked to try more of as I suspect this might catch more coarse fish than dry fly fishing but, others might be more knowledgable than me on that. But have a go and experiment,,lots of fun to be had and very intersting.

Upstream nymphing is certainly a method that has worked for me regarding Barbel, chub etc

Some wonderful minnow patterns about for the perch.
As stated, every coarse fish can be caught on the fly...even Gudgeon.

Fly fishing for coarse fish is a bit gay, it's for those Rainbow stockie bashers who have just whacked too many rank pellet pigs on the head, they now have this thousand yard stare and want to get all cuddly and environmental by targeting the likes of Carp and Chub, yet still ponce about with their tooth picks and plastic lines.

Absolute tossers, just invest in some decent coarse tackle and stop kidding yourselves.

I went fly fishing for grayling on the river Wharfe recently and had a mixed bag on wet fly - grayling, small chub, and a trout. I've also had dace on flies at other. times. i've had the occasional small perch and once a roach, fishing a reservoir for trout.

There's growing interest in catching pike on flies, although it needs heavy specialised rods, lines and flies. I've never tried it, mainly because the pike fishing I do is on spate rivers with steep overgrown banks - casting a big heavy wet fly in these situations usually results in the fly getting caught up on the back cast

I think that unless you live in an area where there are rivers with fast, streamy water, probably you would be better sticking to conventional coarse fishing tackle.

I think that 'pirate' chap is a bit of a wind-up merchant, but I for one will not be rising to the bait.......add smilie things here...

Chub on fly? just great fishing!!

I grease a mono line and run a bushy fly down the stream ahead of a bubble float which helps, to some extent, in guiding the fly. Others have said, and rightly so that the bubble float can be exchanged for a length of peacock rubbered both end-works just as well but IMHO I suggest the bubble gives greater casting weight....I've caught some excellent fish in excess of 6lb this way and is my prefered nethod if conditions are right

Have a go-you will enjoy it!! Even better if you can see the chub !!

I expect 'pirate' is down the tackle shop as we speak buying up all bushy jobs-flies that is!!!

If you want a bit of fun then get down to your local commercial and catch a few carp on fly.

I used to have a very stressful job. After work I used to drive to a small river about 11 miles away. Rig up a fly rod and walk for about half a mile trying out different swims. There was a pub at the end by a bridge that did the best sausage and onion pie with all the trimmings you could ever have. That and a pint followed by a walk back was magic. One day I was on my way back and spotted a chub 30 yards away but I couldn't get near it as there was a row of high bushes along the bank so had to cast a big black bushy job this 30yards or so. First cast landed perfectly just above the chub's nose and he took it. Best cast I have ever done and a lovely big chub to boot. Now, I know that some can make a fly land on a sixpence (thats 2.5 pence in old money to those that havn't lived yet) 100 yards distance but, for me that 30yards was 100 yards.
The reason I relate this is to point out the pleasures of fly fishing for coarse fish for the uninitiated. Those walks, those pies and that fish couldnt get any better. And I always remember that fish even though it was 20 odd years ago.

30 yards is a long cast in fly fishing. To cast that distance accurately and to make your fly land with some finesse takes a huge amount of skill. You're right of course, part of the pleasure of fly fishing is getting the cast just right... especially when you get an instant take afterwards

To be honest Goonch; 30yds may be a bit exaggeration. Was a long time ago but it was a long cast for me. Just trying to point out that fly fishing for coarse fish can be very rewarding. I still dont know why I always remember that fish but, I always do. I think it was just the amount of pleasure it gave at the time.

My mate Dominic Garnett has written a book on the subject (due to be published soon) and is also shooting a DVD with another mate Steve Lockett.

ive only tried to fly for carp once and had everyone on the lake laugh their tits off at me. i am **** at casting with a fly rod and didnt enjoy the arm ache after a couple of hours. BUT i did have 6 or 7 nice carp out with a 12lbs being the best fish. i was fishing a small match lake and proved that carp will take a fly as well as the normal accepted floater baits, egg on the face to the fools that lambasted me :)
