A few weeks ago there I was on the last swim of the afternoon suitably baited up and waiting for darkness.
Then the tell tale stream of needle bubbles went by, an otter on the move.
Oh dear I though thats my chances down the swanee.
Shortly afterwards round whent the rod and a very nice chub came to the net. The size my quite large hands cannot span the back of the head to pick out of the net, loverly.
Followed quickly by another the same size.
Then in the gathering gloom there was the otter swiming from the area where I had hooked both chub.
The otter dissapeared upstream.
Three more reasonable chub followed before I packed in an hour after the first one.
The though struck which species does the otter prey on any specific fish or just whats available at the time.
Of the larger species the river has some salmon, sea trout, lots of pike, perch, barble, chub, big bream and barble. Then a good head of roach dace greyling and trout.
This is not the first time I have seen an otter and caught shortly before or after the sighting.

Earth!
their staple diet consists mainly of eels, but seeing as we have decimated the stocks of these fish otters are having to take other fish as well...Oh dear, have I started something else now!!!
Anyway, otters should be welcomed on waters that have a problem with signal crayfish, they love em!

Ah yes, the dear old Crimes and its sister rags...

Brings to mind an old song lyric:

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

Typical Angling Times overhyped ****, Mark. Full of Mr Angries and no balance. It's their usual weekly wind up: next week it'll be cormorants - again. There's no wonder people keep copies of the damned rag spiked to the bog wall.

They'll eat anything that doesn't cause them too much hard work to catch.

What like acorns, apples and elderberries as they fall from trees?:eek:mg:

I'm inclined to agree with you.

PS, any chance of seeing that enlightening info regards fish stocks you promised us in the last otter debate, if you can't get the links to work, just copy and paste it...

Colin, your not half as clever as you think you are.

Acorns elderberries and apples are not prey, they are fruit!:eek:mg:

Fred, Fred, Fred, the thread starting question is: "What do otters prey on?" to which you replied; "They'll eat anything that doesn't cause them too much hard work to catch."
No mention of the food source needing to be a living creature, just that it was caught, well if you sit under a tree at present, you can "catch" acorns, elderberries and apples.....

Its you that needs to wise up, if you want bites try being a little less crude in your angling than; "Most probably unhealthy or, overweight fish !"

I did find something about recent EA fish surveys on the Ouse. I can't get anything to link anyhow via Safari on my Mac so when I've installed Firefox, I'll try that.

prey (pr)
n.
1. An "animal"hunted or caught for food; quarry.

My answer related to prey, fruit wasn't mentioned.

Not a piece of fruit! So conkers:p

As for looking for bites I have no reason to doubt my statement.
