any thoughts on this reel would it double as a heavy spinning reel , is the gear ratio high enough?

Not sure what the gear ratio is and I'm not sure what makes for a good spinning reel. However, the XTB5500, by virtue of the big spool cranks over 100cm of line per revolution of the handle. Is that enough for you?

These are brilliant reels, I have three and they have performaed faultlessly. The baitrunner front drag gets a bit of getting used to if you are used to a rear baitrunner lever.
But, I would not recommend these as a spinning reel, they are small big pit reels. For spinning or lure fishing then IMO you will struggle to beat a good baitcaster reel.
