I sympathise Mark. I too once had a boat turn turtle on me. It's truly a terrifying experience. Unlike you, I was 2 miles from shore, but fortunately it was in warm water, in Florida, otherwise I wouldn't be here now to tell the tale. A lifejacket saved my life that day

Brings back memories of the Gambia in ’85. A freak Atlantic breaker flipped our hired ‘hobbycat’ (smallish catamaran) luckily not more than 30m from the beach. It skied and landed upside down and when I swam clear could not see my wife – luckily I had a quite a lot of boating experience and the first thing I remembered was the if you turn turtle you have to swim down before you can swim up. Unfortunately my wife had not, no life jackets – thankfully I managed to swim back under and drag her out. She’s a good sport and has completed many boating trips since.:wh
