What do you use to attach lure to trace? When using Drennan (example)ready made traces I`ve always had ones that were fitted with small (what I would call) snap swivels... Recently read they`re completely wrong to use!?

What's best o'wise ones?

The best connection to make between main line and a trace with a lure or hooks is a combination of a good quality swivel and a crosslock link.

I normally buy some swivels, about size 8 and buy the crosslocks separately. Recently I've had trouble finding crosslocks in shops. This gadget from Fox is similar in design and is strong enough to handle pike.

Avoid those safety pin type swivels which are sometimes attached to cheap swimfeeders. They aren't very strong.

This link shows you various types of crosslocks and accompanying swivels. Can't vouch for the reliability of the brand, but the pictures show you how the crosslock is designed.

Finally, this type of safelink is acceptable for general coarse fishing, but not for pike, as it can open up under tension.

Hope you have success lure fishing - it's a good time of the year for it.

Those fox swivel / snap combos are horrendous IMO I just got some last week to try out and since the snap part of it also swivels its a nightmare trying to unclip the damned thing! Can't beat a swivel on one end of your wire and a good duo lock or similar on the other end. Whatever variety of snap you use make sure it is one that cannot be pulled undone, those that coem on most premade lure traces are as much use as a chocolate fireguard :)

Cheers Keith, looking forward to it!

Something like these would be best I take it?

Those are perfect! no need to attach em to a swivel either, just one of those on one end and a size 8 swivel on the other end :)

I used these which came from Fox -

However, it seems they've discontinued them, I don't know why because they are really good. Fortunately, I bought enough to see my life out.

I do use these on big heavy traces

But a hell of a job to open with cold hands.
