Out fishing the other day with my swingers up tight as poss for drop backs when along came harry enfield and said "you dont wanna do that" no one fishes tight lines any more.

I'd say that once again it's horses for courses.

Different situations demand different approaches.
To snags, then tight is good.
For close in shallow water that is clear, then tight isn't good.
