I caught this fish at the weekend and I'm not sure what kind it is....I was told it could be a crusian carp or a brown goldfish.

can somebody help me to ID the fish

Sorry I don't know how to do the link thingy

looks a bit like a wild carp, they still exist in some waters don't they? The fins look very Bream coloured or is that just my eyes :0S

Macca,

To be honest, I thought it was a bream, caught it on a lake though, not wild water

The dorsal (concave) is wrong for crucian as is the lateral line count (30?) and shape so my guess is either brown goldfish or goldfish crossed with common carp.

hmmmm, I don't think it's a true bream the more I look at it the more species I can see in it, dorsal fin looks like a wild carp, body looks like crucian/goldfish, fins coloured like a bream :0S must have been some very dodgy fish orgy to produce it lol

Difficult Claudia!!

Many fisheries buy brown goldfish that are sold as crucian carp and worse still hybrids abound!

From the shape of the dorsal fin and the colour maybe a wild carp hybrid?

It's a freak Claudia!

Looks like most of it is brown goldfish to me, nice fish though ;-)

Steve,

So I caught a close member of my family? lol

The only thing that doesn't look right to me for a brown goldfish is the tail fin.

I give up on this one lol...I think it might be a hybrid

Yes I was but a angler friend caught one almost identical(a little bigger than mine) at a different place, so I don't think it was an F1 carp x

The reason I ask is my club have a small carp pool and have a similiar carp stocked in there

It's deffo a hybrid Claudia, the commercial probably contains a lot of different species and it looks like they have been getting very "jiggy" with each other.

Yes, and never had a chromosome of bream in its odd ancestry

I done some more research on this one and I must agree with you Steve, it definitely looks a hybrid to me too.

The fish these days have to be more careful....don't they have biology lessons in fish school? FFT!!!!

Did you catch it in Somerset Claudia?

You don't want to know what goes on in those small villages! They play banjo's and drink moonshine!

Does look like a Bream/Carp Hybrid, it has the "chunk" of a carp and the colour/fins from the bream, its a tough one!
