A SCHEME to encourage youngsters to get into fishing has been highly commended in a top event.

The Pendle Buddies Fishing Club - organised by Barnoldswick-based PC Mark Hyde - received recognition from the High Sheriff of Lancashire, Mr Peter Robinson, in his Shrievalty Rose Bowl event.

The scheme was credited with reducing criminal damage and anti-social behaviour over the summer and saw 36 youths aged eight to 16 take part in fishing activities to give them a new hobby.

As well as learning how to fish, the youngsters had classroom sessions on health and hygiene, safety and respect for the environment.

PC Hyde said: "Fishing is one of the highest participation sports in the country with research showing that 20% of children aged 12 to 16 have gone fishing in the past two years and a further 20% would like to try the sport.

"However, it is sometimes difficult for them to experience this type of activity. This is where, hopefully, 'Fishing Buddies' has, and will continue to, fill the gap, giving many youngsters the opportunity to experience the sport but also to learn many new 'life' skills along the way."'

He added: "The scheme has also built bridges with the young people in Pendle and built respect both ways, giving each a greater understanding of the other."
