Guys/gals I need to pick your brains if I may.....I want to tie some rigs with silkworm, which I have never used before.....do I need to use a certain knot for it or can I tie the knot the same way I would tie mono?

I use a 3 turn grinner knot:

Sean

Thanks I was thinking of a 5 turn grinner....I use that knot for most of my tying and it never let me down, I wasn't sure if I could use it to tie silkworm with.

Some more info:

Don't try to use a blood knot with braid

Breaking strains for lines like silkworm are nearly always understated. 10lb Silkworm will break consistently at around 14lb (12lb Berkley Big Game always breaks before 10lb Silkworm).

Braid tangles easily so always use an anti tangle tube behind the lead or use a set up like the one here

Hooks with large eyes are best Drennan Barbel Specialists are good.

Braid isn't very abrasion resistant. If the fish takes you through weed check the hook link carefully before using it again

Thank you for the info and link Sean, it was very helpful...I might have to re-think my rigs if braid isn't very abrasion resistant.

I'll be fishing in france soon for carp, sturgon and catfish.

I don't know Christian, I never used braid before, a couple of the guys I'm going with are swearing on silkworm so I thought I'd give it a try but not too sure now :-(

Fluorocarbon is very abrasion resistant and you can use Ghost or similar to tie rigs. Another material to try is Amnesia.

Have a look here

Stiff rigs are the ones to go for.

Hi Claudia, Lots of the carp lads going to France use Mantis Gold or green.Snakebite, Silkworm, or even Quicksilver all in 15lb to 25lb. you wont go wrong with it I can assure you, even the lads your going with use it. I presume they know what they are doing.Lots of the top carp anglers use it,Dave Lane, Tim Paisley,to name just two most other top anglers use it as well, but won't admit to it because they are sponsored by other inferior brands. Woodys link speaks for itself.

Claudia ......Im out in France same time as you
Im on a lake that I been to 16 times before, last time there I ended up in a snaggy swim
up until that point I have had big carp and sturgeon on 12lb line and 14lb braid for hooklength with no problems but in this particular swim that was like fishing with butter
I swapped to 50lb braid main line and Quicksilver Gold which cured most of my problems

love the stuff, but i wouldnt use silkworm on a water with crays/chat - they'll just knit a jumper with it.

Claudia if your thinking of buying any quicksilver for the cats don't bother. I'll send you some if you need it, just PM me your address! I'm not sure what strain it is but it's one of the the higher ones.

new problems if your interested was I started straightening hooks so take some tough hooks with you

Frothey sent me some Mantis dark which I done some test on and is superb

it just goes to show the next weakest link

brush up on your knots also knots that are ok here can be shit with a 80lb stugeon or a 120lb cat or a 50lb carp

go to a tackle shop and get a mag called "tight lines journal 2007" which is a free mag but in it Roy Marlow shows you what knot for what line or braid

what Im taking this time.......
quicksilver 35lb
quicksiver gold 35lb
mantis dark 25lb

braided main line

hooks Im taking Drennen continentals and if they go (straight) Ive got some ESP big t raptors and if they go I go.......home

I only use the above if in a snag swim again if not Im back to bass pro line ,super silk and drennen boilie hooks

good luck and dont forget to text me

I would have offered to help you Claudia but all these guys are now jumping in on my act. Good luck in France.

Oh' by the way I may be wrong but I think that all the Kryston lines have the recommended knots on the bottom of the spools.

Good luck again, go careful on the cheap plonk and don't fall in the drink.
