Fly tying

Hi

I've just started tying my own flies after years of buying ready tied ones. I've bought a couple of Trout & Salmon videos which help but a book would be a great help.

Any idea???

Thanks Ian.

I must admit though, that I could do with one with patterns though to give me a good start.

I will check it out though.

Why do you need patterns? Tie your flies to imitate what YOU can see, you can catch on flies without labels on.

Ian is quite right. With odd exceptions (such as the Invicta - a fly I wouldn't be without), all you need to do is to tie a few basic generic shapes. eg:

Midge Pupa
Damsel Nymphs
GRHE nymphs
Montana variants
Simple dry fly and emerger patterns especially using CDC

These flys will cover you for 80% of still water conditions.

Good points from all of you and I think its every trout anglers dream to catch fish on a personalised fly.

I'm trying a few adaptations on a water tommorrow (friday) - I'll ley you know how I do!
