I was fishing for Bream at the weekend and started catching fish that has scars on them. Some of the scars were minor but the biggest fish of the day was very badly scarred. Can anyone explain this.

I thought that the scars might be from some sort of disease as they didn't look like Pike attack marks. Most of the fish had bloody blisters on them. The fish are just after spawning? The lake is seldom fished and so they would not be caused by keepnets.

Thanks

Gareth

Most likley caused by spawning, they bash about and bang into things, and go completely wild, just like me and the wife.

fish are really hardy creatures and survive masive trauma. I've had carp with one eye and one pectoral fin, all scarred down the side with a big hole where the eye used to be. Merrily swimming around healed up nicely and obviously feeding as i caught it! Looked very healthy besides that.

If you don't have already, get some Klin-ik antiseptic for the fish you pull out that are bleeding either in their mouths or wherever.

You'd need a bloody account with klin-ik for them wounds though!!!
