Issued by the Environment Agency:

This year, the Environment Agency have restocked the Midlands rivers with nearly a hundred thousand new fish.

The fish are all coarse fish species: Grayling, Chub, Roach, Barbel and Dace, and have been introduced to rivers around the region such as the Leam, Trent and Tame.

The restocking of rivers in our region is part of the Environment Agency’s ongoing river rehabilitation programme.

These fish were reared at the Environment Agency’s Fish Farm at Calverton, Nottinghamshire, and transported to sites in oxygenated tanks. This ensured that they were in the fittest possible condition when stocked into the different rivers. The local Environment Agency fisheries teams helped with the distribution and stocking.

Fisheries Technical Officer Mick Buxton says “Our rivers are the healthiest they have been for 20 years, but we need to do even more to meet stringent new European Union standards. We're working with farmers, businesses and water companies to reduce pollution and improve water quality.”

“This is important for the future of the fish that live in our rivers. The work we are doing under the EU Water Framework Directive to improve water quality is helping to make our rivers a better place for fish to thrive. “
