Much of the blame came be directed towards the NRA with its 'improvement' and flood defence work it carried out in the 80's.
I had an e-mail from someone involved with the ERT some months ago saying they were concerned about the decline of the Edens chub and dace stocks. As the Petteril and other small rivers and becks were major nursery and spawning areas for the lower Eden, restoring the habitat of these might just go some way in improving the Eden.
On one, Rickerby beck, almost every fish in over 3 miles vanished after the NRA 'improved' what was a delightful little fishery
60-80 lbs of chub and dace were almost a common occurrence. I fished the same beck in 2005 and had 2 dace in about 5 hours, fishing the old 'hot spots'
